3D Printing for Sculpture

Rick Griffin was an American artist and one of the leading designers of psychedelic posters in the 1960s. He was closely identified with the surfing subculture, and his work was ubiquitous on film posters, album covers, and underground comic strips.

In this collaboration, I assisted SF based artist Jud Bergeron & the Griffin Estate on a commemorative sculpture to celebrate Griffin’s achievements with his iconic flying eyeball.

The final ZBrush model was decimated and 3D printed to serve as the initial positive. Bergeron then sculpted upon the print before using the lost-wax technique to cast a series of bronze pieces, custom-patinating each one.
